Caution! Watch a Herd of Javelina in the Cottages At Coffeepot...

Watch a Herd of Javelina in the Cottages At Coffeepot!

When most people see a Javelina pronounced (Have-ah-LEE-nah), they think it is a big hairy hog. Some think they are big rodents because of their long, razor-sharp canine teeth. Again, that is not correct. Javelina is a species of collared peccary. They rest during the day's heat, but they are most active at dawn and dusk. They give off an unmistakable odor that strengthens the closer you get to them. Families roam together. Generally, they are found in a herd of 10 or so. This video shows 13 together. I have seen as many as 30-40 grazing in a group. Eyesight is bad. They rely on scent and sound. They do spook easily, which will cause the hair on their back to stand up. They are new-world creatures and are fascinating to observe.
